Swiss Stars produced a superb performance to defeat holders Vienna CC and lift the Spring Cup in Vienna this weekend.
Six teams from six different countries competed in the fast-paced indoor tournament, played 8-a-side over 10 overs per innings. Alongside the finalists, the competition featured Fjord CC (Norway), Twenty20 Cricket Academy, Estonia, and KACR Academy (Czech Republic).
After a series of competitive early fixtures, the tournament split into two clear groups, with the top three battling for a place in the final and the remaining sides gaining valuable experience.
Vienna CC progressed to the final with a 100% record, while the final spot was decided in the last group match between Swiss Stars and Fjord CC. Swiss posted 62/5, which looked below par. Fjord appeared in control at 35/3 after five overs, but a series of run outs and crucial “roofed” dismissals turned the game, and they were bowled out for 45 in the ninth over.
The final proved equally dramatic. Swiss Stars, one of the youngest sides in the tournament, were under early pressure at 25/4. However, they rebuilt well, with Alfie Coulson’s 20 helping them to a competitive 82.
Vienna struggled to keep pace in the chase, losing wickets regularly under scoreboard pressure. Despite a late 19-run stand for the final wicket, another “roofed” dismissal ended their hopes, with Swiss Stars sealing an impressive 31-run victory.
The win highlights the strength of Switzerland’s junior development programme, with their young side showing composure, discipline and game awareness throughout.
Attention now turns to upcoming international events, including the Vienna Summer Cup for Walking Cricket, the new Autumn Cup in Tallinn, Estonia, and the Women & Girls Autumn Cup in Vienna.
