Faircliff shines as Academy "A" end the season with a loss
The Twenty20 Cricket Academy "A" team travelled to Weybridge for their final game of the season against an opposition team featuring two Academy players.
Match Highlights package
Winning the toss, the Academy chose to bat on a slow pitch with a full size boundary making run scoring more challenging than normal.
The Academy started slowly with the top 3 batsmen all having strike rate in the low 30s and at 37-3 in the 12th over, a low total was looking likely.
However debutant Ollie Honeybone joined captain Sam Partridge at the crease and smashed the ball to all parts, hitting 7 fours in a lively innings of 56 off just 47 balls as Partridge rotated the strike effectively scoring 44 off 65 balls. Both were out slogging in the last over of the innings as the Academy pushed their score up to 147-6 off their 30 overs which looked potentially 15-20 runs short.
In reply, Weybridge lost an early wicket with Academy player Bhuvi Chopra bowled by Ishaan Mohan.
At 63-3 in the 16th over it looked like the Academy had a foothold back in the match but a fantastic innings from Fred Faircliff, albeit dropped 3 or 4 times, with 62 not out off 65 balls with 10 fours, was the difference between the two sides (plus 1st XI player Brent Kay whose fielding was an example to all present!).
A great game with Weybridge the deserved victors. A "season ender" fixture was agreed for 2021 and the Academy are already planning for revenge.
