Esher in narrow rained affected win over Twenty20 Academy "A"
The Twenty20 Cricket Academy "A" team, fresh from their 2-day win last week, travelled to Old Paulines CC to play a strong Esher under 15s side.
Winning the toss, the Academy elected to bat but lost wickets steadily after a 28 run opening partnership to find themselves struggling at 42-4. However, Nathan Jones joined captain Rafe Worsfold at the crease to add 86 valuable runs with Jones making yet another half-century ending on 53 off 38 balls.
The 40 over match was reduced to 32 overs by rain mid-innings which, with Duckworth-Lewis-Stern not enforced, meant that the Academy innings probably ended 20 runs short of what they would have expected.
Esher lost to early wickets in reply but looked to be cruising at 93-2 until Ishaan Mohan came on to bowl and decimated the Esher middle-order after Sam Partridge had made early inroads. Mohan took a personal best 5-26, backed up by some exceptional close catching from Bhuv Chopra to leave Esher flailing at 127-7. However an unbroken 8th wicket partnership of 36 saw Esher home by 3 wickets in the final over.
It was a shame that weather intervened when it did, however a good close game demonstrated how closely matched the two teams were.
