Academy "A" team come second in annual Farnham season opener
Our "A" team were defeated by Farnham U15s in our traditional season opener at their beautiful Folly Hill ground at the foot of Farnham Castle.
Winning the toss, captain Alfie Haxton decided to bat in good conditions and a quick outfield, eyeing up a score of around 175. It didn't go to plan, however, with Ed Marsh running himself out on the second ball of the game.
Harry Musgrave and Haxton steadied the ship, but in the fifth over Musgrave chipped a catch to mid wicket. Haxton, off the back of a century for school the previous day, looked in good form but edged behind in the following over, leaving the Academy 24-3.
Ralph Dennis and James Pearson took the score onto 47 with some careful batting but Farnham captain Kirkland took his second catch of the innings to remove Dennis. Pearson added 24 runs with Matti Thompson before both followed in quick succession, leaving the Academy 77-6 off 13 overs, scoring at a good rate but losing too many wickets.
Arjun Balashanker slogged at a straight one to be bowled and Ollie Owen become the second player to run themselves out leaving number 11 Kartik Tank to take the Academy team over 100 and become innings top scorer with some lusty blows, taking the team to a defendable 121 but leaving 2 overs un-bowled.
In reply, Ed Marsh bowled a super opening spell of 3 overs, only going for 4 runs, but the Farnham openers of Wells-Cole and Mann didn't look in too much trouble. They retired not out at the 12 overs drinks break. Captain Kirkland was bowled by Pearson, the only wicket to fall, as the hosts cruised home with just over two overs to spare despite a strong 3 overs from Dennis for only 5 runs.
Early season games are ideal to get some time at the crease and overs under the belt and I am sure there will be better days in the near future for the young Academy team, half of whom were under 14s.
