South Surrey Indoor League Update
At the midway point of the indoor league held at Guildford Cricket Centre, things are finely poised going in to the second round of matches. The five teams have produced a series of close and competitive matches, with three teams currently separated by one win for the two qualifying positions for the all-county play-offs.
AZ Sports currently top the table undefeated from their five games, closely followed by Churt and Whiteley Village with three wins each. Although Whiteley do have a game in hand on their opponents, the two teams meet each other in their next fixture with one guaranteed to leap ahead of the other for the time being, with the game of the tournament so far being the first encounter between these two team where Whiteley needed 2 from the final 2 balls. At the lower end of the table are Walton-on-Thames who, although they have only picked up the one win, have been involved in a number of close games with two going down to the final ball before a result could be confirmed. Merrow have yet to record a win but their youthful team have made strides each week and are ever closer to getting that first win. They recorded their highest score of the tournament in a losing result in their last game against table toppers AZ, having also had the opposition in trouble at 64-4 in the game.
There is a spread of teams at the top of the batting averages, with Merrow’s George Trueman less than 12 runs ahead of the Saj Hussain and Zafar Khan from AZ. Spin seems to be the way to go with left arm spinner Matthew Painter leading the wicket takers with six, one ahead of Churt’s Dan Higgins - with another spinner, Joshua William, in third with four. Dan Higgins currently leads the MVP standings marginally ahead of Zafar Khan.
With what we have seen so far this season, the second half will surely delight, with the scores increasing as teams get used to the format and understand how best to approach each game. Will AZ remain unbeaten? Can Merrow record a victory? Who will finish in the top two? Only time will tell but you can be sure the cricket will be exciting.
