Thursley AZ Sports crowned 2015/16 Surrey ECB Indoor Cricket League champions

Thursley AZ Sports are the 2015/16 Surrey ECB Indoor Cricket League champions after a great Finals evening on Sunday at Surrey CCC’s Guildford Centre which was filled with some excellent cricket and plenty of drama.

The winners, who came out top of the South Division of the indoor league, accounted for Wimbledon CC in their semi-final, before edging a low-scoring final over Hampton Wick Royal CC to take their place as the county’s representative in the ECB National Finals.

In that first semi-final, Thursley AZ Sports got the evening underway posted a strong total of 137 for 6 (all out) off their 12 overs. Having lost a wicket off the second ball of the innings, Abid Ahmed with 43 and Fahim Baharami with 28 top scored with the bat, with 43 run also coming in extras. Alan Hunt and Ryan Patel taking a wicket apiece.

In reply, Wimbledon were in the game but just lost wickets at regular intervals thanks to some outstanding fielding, meaning they closed on 92 for 6 (all out) in 8.1 overs.

James Johnston’s 33 was the highlight of their innings which saw three batsmen run out, and Sufiaan Munir take 2 for 33.

The second semi-final then saw Hampton Wick Royal successfully defend their total to also make it to the Final, at the expense of Horsley & Send CC Lions.

HWR set the Lions a target of 124, but that total proved enough and was brilliantly defended thanks to some quick accurate bowling and sharp fielding.

So to the eagerly-awaited Final which somewhat surprisingly turned out to be a low scoring affair with Thursley AZ Sports batting first only making 86 for 6 (all out) in only 9.5 overs. Having recovered from 7 for 1, they fell from 61 for 3 to 68 for 5, before a late rally gave them something to bowl at.

Anjum Zeeshan top scored with 22 and Sufiaan Munir made 17 as Fawad Anis took 2 for 22

Hampton Wick had the game in the bag but in their reply a couple of unnecessary run outs cost them dearly as they were bowled out for 63 in 8.2 overs.

The run outs of Anis and Ali at 11 for 1 and 17 for 2 were a big dent initially but HWR looke to have recovered before the dismissal of top scorer Ahmad for 20 – given out handled ball, at 57 for 4 was the beginning of the end. The final two HWR wickets fell on 63 with an over of each other, giving Thursley AZ Sports victory by 23 runs.

So congratulations to Thursley AZ Sports on their success. They now progress to the ECB Indoor National Club Championship play-offs where they will face the winners of the Middlesex county competition on Sunday 14th February 2016.
