Twenty20 Academy up to second, in tight Surrey Cricket Junior League

As the outside temperatures fall, the Surrey Junior Indoor League is heating up! 5 skilled and competitive teams are participating, and there is all to play for at the halfway stage. Last Sunday, Twenty20 Academy were pushed to the very end by Effingham CC (last year's champions, no less!). Chasing 99 to win, one of their strongest batting displays of the year saw them home in the 10th over.

Batting first, Effingham's Sam Partridge and Raymond Wing played some exquisite shots in their opening partnership. Unfortunately cover drives do not bring the same reward indoors as they do outdoors! The middle and late order played selflessly to push Effingham's score up to 98. Every Twenty20 bowler chipped in, without anybody standing out. A tidy fielding effort, with excellent throwing and backing up, contributed to keeping Effingham below 100.

Joe Barker and Alex Yates were the backbone of the Twenty20 chase. Both made very few errors of judgement, and they showed great understanding running between the wickets....calm but clear. Their constant rotation of the strike put them ahead of the required rate early.

Effingham's bowlers all beat the outside edge a couple of times, and were unlucky not to take at least one early wicket. But they were unable to exert pressure for long periods against the disciplined openers. Twenty20 When the openers left the crease, Keiran Meah - rapidly turning into a reliable pressure player - took responsibility to see Twenty20 home.

A good contest between two fine teams, who are improving by the week! There is a good chance the re-match will be a title decider in 5 weeks time.

Other matches

Weybridge "B" produced their best performance of the year, against high fliers Weybridge "A". These intra-club games either bring the best or the worst out of players, and the "B"s certainly upped their game!

After Henry Francis and Freddy Faircliff got off to their characteristic rapid start, their opponents tightened their bowling, and slowed them down. Ollie Wingrove played a key role in the middle order, scoring a solid 20....it took an amazing reflex catch by Michael Thornberry to dislodge him.

The "B"s demonstrated that they have great potential. Adam Crossland and Freddie Huntington was especially impressive, spinning the ball square - almost too much to keep it on the pitch! With a few more weeks practice, and some more consistency to go with the odd "magic ball", they will be a threat to any team.

A couple of early run outs threatened to derail Weybridge "B" in their reply, but Rahil Patel and Tom Bellwood stood firm. Their partnership used up 8 overs, and both reached double figures. This ensured that the score reached 112, their best total of the season! Weybridge "A" will expect to give away far fewer extras next week, although Luke McCarthy was an exception with his tight, lively spell.

How they stand

Weybridge "A" reach the halfway stage top, leading Twenty20 Academy by 2 points, and Effingham by 4.
