Twenty20 Surrey Men's Indoor Cricket League 2017/18

The 4th Twenty20 Men's Indoor Cricket League kicks off on Sunday 1st October!

This year, 23 cricket clubs, representing various amateur leagues throughout the county, will be vying for the title. With some high quality, highly motivated and experienced sides, last season's champions (Wimbledon CC) will have their work cut out to defend their status

The venues and Leagues

Outer London:

We are returning to The Wimbledon Club for the fourth year in a row. Only slightly bigger than a tennis court, and with a fast and bouncy surface. Players will need a command not just of front and back foot play, but sharpness of mind and speedy running, to prosper in this intimate arena. When a crowd gathers to watch, it can feel as if every spectator is right on top of you, with every comment audible.

Wimbledon College is new to the 2017/18 season, and its wider dimensions may favour the hard-hitters....this promises to be a high-scoring venue.

Central Surrey:

Downsend School hosted the 2016/17 finals day, and has been the home of the Central Surrey division for 4 seasons. This hall offers an intriguing balance between bat and ball, risk and reward. Good shots and bowling accuracy is rewarded. There is just enough swing and spin to keep the fielding side interested, but a large enough boundary to keep a pinch-hitter threatening.

Note to batsman....the boundary wall may seem appealing. But don't get too greedy, a metal bar hangs menacingly about two thirds of the way up. Any shots above this line run the risk of a deflection, and a certain six can end up in your dismissal!

Note to the bowlers....practice pitching the ball up! The mat extends to half way, and anything shorter will be called a no-ball. Hitting back-of-a-length consistently will cause big problems! But there is a small margin of error!

Note to the fielders....a boundary line runs across the back of the hall (for the safety of fielders). Keep your heels the right side of the line, to make sure your catches and stops are legal! Balls off the ceiling tend to drop vertically downwards.

South Surrey:

The Surrey Cricket Centre at George Abbott School, is our final venue. Expansive, and with a skiddy, true pitch, teams should be aiming for "stick cricket" run-rates. Even 150 is a highly achievable target.

George Abbott has hosted the Surrey final many times, and the atmosphere on the large balcony can be electric.

Games to look out for:

Wimbledon V Spencer

For the last 3 seasons, few contests have entertained as thoroughly as this match-up, between two of South London's premier clubs. In 2014, Spencer revived themselves from a near hopeless position....chasing 123 to win from 10-2.

Next year, Wimbledon inflicted the same fate on their neighbours, another high scoring thriller won by the chasers. 2016 seemed to be more one-sided, before a late Wimbledon wobble made things VERY interesting at the death.

These two teams are a shining example of how enthralling indoor cricket can be. And also, proof that you have never won a six-a-side cricket match until the final ball. Momentum swings wildly.

Oxted & Limpsfield V Worcester Park

Both of these Central League teams have played in previous editions. Worcester Park got off to a flyer last season, before tailing off towards the end. Oxted were involved in many tight contests through the season, but finished strong, making it to the Surrey play-offs.

If both clubs bring their A-game to this match, a thriller will be in store.
