A look back at a Twenty20 Community Cricket of Summer!

The arrival of September inevitably means the last knockings of the 2016 cricket season in the coming weeks.

And for us here at Twenty20 Community Cricket, it provides us with the ideal opportunity to reflect on what has been another busy and successful summer.

Schools and Primary Achool Academies (PSAs)

Our work in primary schools has seen us coach before-school, lunchtime and after-school clubs in Surrey, plus a number in Warwickshire and Leicestershire.

Many of our school are now also Primary School Academies, with more set to benefit from our programme, which is the first of its kind - in the 2016/17 school calendar year.

In addition to our work in Schools, we have run a number of schools tournaments in and around Surrey.

Academy

The Twenty 20 Community Cricket continues to go from strength to strength.

In addition to our regular training programme and a string of matches across our age groups, which has also included hosting Switzerland Under 11s on their UK tour, we have also set up an Academy with the British Tamils Cricket League, which is open to all communities.

This new initiative has been running since the turn of the year accommodating children aged between 7 and 13 and is one of only three in the country - the others being Leicester and Essex).

'Summer Smash' Holiday Cricket Camps

Twenty 20 Community Cricket’s School Holiday ‘Summer Smash’ Cricket Camps were once again a huge success.

During the Easter, Whitsun and main summer school holidays, we ran nearly 30 courses in different venues in Surrey and Warwickshire.

Our sincere thanks go to the following clubs for their support in hosting our 2016 Summer Smash Courses.

  • Addiscombe CC

  • Capel CC

  • Deando Ruxley CC

  • Epsom CC

  • Godalming CC

  • Gordon’s School CC, Woking

  • Hampton Wick Royal CC

  • Leatherhead CC

  • Willoughby CC, near Rugby, Warwickshire

Here's some additional thoughts from our Twenty20 Community Cricket team

Darren Talbot - Managing Director

"A highlight for me was Tiam's 95 not out at the Academy camp - our highest score so far at a Camp".

Robin Maslin - International Director

International flavour - there were cricketers or coaches from UK, America, Switzerland, France and Ivory Coast in attendance! Sekou was a pleasure to have working with us, and we sent him home with a few momentos.

Talent in all departments - there appears to be a bit of a leg-spin revival around Surrey! Charlie Sell, Will Day and Jai graham are among the twirlers to look out for in the near future.....coming to confuse batsmen near you!

Group spirit - Older and younger, talented and less talented worked well together, especially at Epsom camp and academy camp. Made it an altogether nicer experience, when experienced colts made the less experienced ones feel like they belonged.

The schools activity at Paddox Primary School and English Martyrs RC Primary School here in Rugby, Warwickshire, was once again a huge success with another great set of keen eager cricketers – both boys and girls.

It is just a shame the weather at times meant the weekly sessions at English Martyrs were a little stop-start!

Nevertheless, both were hugely enjoyable and productive, as was our coaching at Sparkenhoe School in Leicester, this being what we anticipate will be the first of many more schools we will be active in across Leicestershire in 2017!

To round off the summer here, our two Summer Smash Cricket Camps in July and August at Willoughby CC near Rugby in Warwickshire were once again hugely successful, with both weeks fully booked on many days.

  • Whilst the cricket season may be drawing to a close, as always Twenty20 Community Cricket will still be very active in the close season.
