Great first week of Summer Smash at Willoughby CC

Week 2 of Twenty20 Community Cricket’ Summer Smash Cricket Camps saw the first of our two weeks back at Willoughby Cricket Club in Warwickshire.

It is now the fifth year we have been at Willoughby CC - a village club in picturesque surroundings based near Rugby in Warwickshire close to the county border with Northamptonshire, and our first week for 2016 has proved just as successful as those before it...with another still to come.

During the course of the week, coaches Wayne, Kieran and George put local youngsters from around the Rugby, Daventry and Warwickshire/Northants borders through their paces with a series of skills sessions all rounded off with Twenty20 style matches in the afternoon between the locally named Willoughby Willows and Rugby Highwaymen

Monday was a focus on batting and a variety of skills and shots adapted to the T20 game, which were put to the test in a good first Twenty20 game which ended an energetic first day.

Tuesday saw attention switch to bowling in a T20 game with a look at how to bowl at various points in a T20 innings. It was clear the youngsters were taking it all in as they were tried out well in the afternoon’s game, even if the batsmen did come out on top!

Wednesday saw a bit of dodging the showers, but in between the rain the group went through a series of fielding drills and skills before another good T20 game in the afternoon.

Thursday also saw a few showers appear but that did not lessen the enthusiasm (if anything, it only enhanced it with some great sliding fielding stops) as the morning saw a recap of the first three days with another close T20 after lunch.

Friday was T20 Game Day with a soft ball game with everyone involved and then the youngsters then split into their age appropriate groups for their afternoon games (scorecard here) to round off a very productive entertaining and successful first week.

*Twenty20 Community Cricket will be back at Willoughby CC near Rugby in Warwickshire for a second week of Summer Smash Cricket Camp fun from Monday 8th to Friday 12th August.
